Bauxite has been mined in Guinea since the colonial time when la Compagnie des Bauxites du Midi, started mining on the Islands of Kassa near Conakry.
Today, Bauxite is produced by 3 companies: CBG, CBK, and FRIGUIA.
While CBG and CBK export their whole productions, FRIGUIA produces alumina from its bauxite.
In order to add more value to this production, the government of Guinea in partnership with different companies is promoting some new projects that emphasize alumina production, with the vision to enter in the near future, into aluminium production. These projects include: alumina refinery at Sangarédi by Global Alumina Corporation, alumina refinery at Kamsar by Alcoa, Rio Tinto and Alcan and alumina refinery at Dian-Dian by RuSal.
